Wang Wei is a famous poet in Chinese history and his work is called “poetry with paintings and poems in his paintings.” Basho is Japan’s Haruhiko and his reforms and innovations have brought haiku to a vista. Putting these two writers together is that they are all greatly influenced by Buddhism. Their works contain Zen and the pursuit of the unity of things and me. However, Wang Wei pursues the silence, and Basho prefers loneliness. By comparing the similarities and differences between the two writers’ works, this paper explores the influence of Zen Consciousness on the poetry of China and Japan.
