大学英语教师除了掌握必要的学科内容和教学技能外,还必须拥有“扩展的专业特性”。这种扩展的专业特性是指教师要通过系统的自我研究及通过研究别的教师和课堂检验的相关理论,实现专业上的自我发展,即教师必须成为研究者。《行动研究与教师专业发展——大学英语教师ESP方向》一书全面分析了我国大学英语教师专业发展所面临的困境与挑战,提出大学英语教师应适时调整自己的专业发展,以ESP教师为方向,并以行动研究来实现自身的专业化发展。
