Mr. Junnosuke Ishimoto, our respected Japanese friend, passed away on February 16. He was born in Dalian and spent 12 years in the city. Having lived in Japan for several decades, his feelings for his birthplace never changed. He cared about the city’s development and donated to the city’s education, and showed people what China-Japan friendship meant with his deeds.
Mr. Ishimoto had been a member of the Nagasaki Prefectural Assembly for 16 years. He made outstanding achievements in old-age care with funds from charity and was a well-known figure in local political and business circles. After a successful career, he wanted very much to do something for the exchanges between Nagasaki and Dalian and build a bridge of friendship between the two localities. He played hosts to Chinese delegations that included leaders of Dalian City and people of educational circles. His warm and meticulous reception made everyone feel at home. At the mention of him, they could not help expressing their gratitude and respect. He also organized local people to visit Dalian so that more people from Nagasaki would know about the city.
For the past 23 consecutive years since 1989, Mr. Ishimoto would annually donate 1 million Japanese yen to Dalian’s education cause. The accumulated amount reached 23 million yen (about 1.8 million yuan). The education department of Dalian set up a fund with the donations to reward excellent students and more than 30,000 middle and primary school students benefited. At Mr. Ishimoto’s home, calligraphic works by Dalian children were hung on the walls of his living room. This had become precious collection from which he found comfort and hope. The donations he made over the years and the sincerity reflected by his persistence was most moving and admirable.
The Dalian Municipal Government conferred the title of Honorary Dalian Citizen upon Mr. Ishimoto in 1993 in recognition of his prominent contributions to exchanges and cooperation between Dalian and Japan. Since then, Mr. Ishimoto had worked even harder in bridge-building work until he breathed his last. Not long before his death, he was still concerned with organizing a Nagasaki entrepreneurs’ delegation to Dalian. His perseverance in friendship with China touched people around him and firmed his children’s conviction to continue to work for enhancing Sino-Japanese friendship.
“I love Dalian.” Mr. Ishimoto’s words revealed his true feelings. We will never forget this Japanese friend who had contributed to the cause of China-Japan friendship.
Rest in peace, Mr. Junnosuke Ishimoto. The people of Dalian will always remember you.
