Objective To analyze the epidemic situation and epidemic characteristics of malaria in Jiangsu province from 2005 to 2014 and provide basis for formulating and adjusting malaria elimination strategies and measures in the province. Methods The data of malaria epidemic in Jiangsu Province from 2005 to 2014 were collected to analyze the incidence of malaria, the source of infection and the distribution of time, region and population of the cases. Results A total of 5 069 malaria cases were reported in Jiangsu Province from 2005 to 2014, of which 3,422 (67.51%) were Plasmodium vivax, 1 497 (29.53%) were Plasmodium falciparum, and 150 (2.96% There were 2,139 cases (42.20%) of malaria cases, 1,131 cases (22.31%) of imported cases and 1,799 cases (35.49%) of imported cases. There were 3,809 male cases and 1 260 female cases, with a sex ratio of 3.02:1 . The cases were mainly aged from 25 to 60 years old, accounting for 67.15% of the cases. The main occupation was peasants and migrant workers, accounting for 40.26% and 23.63% respectively. 60.58% cases were distributed in Xuzhou, Suqian, Huaian, Suzhou and Nantong. In 2005-2009, the majority of cases were Plasmodium vivax, with predominantly falciparum malaria since 2010 and mainly imported from abroad. There were no local cases of infection since 2012. Conclusion The outbreak of malaria in Jiangsu Province has been effectively controlled and the goal of malaria elimination has been initially achieved. However, the number of imported malaria cases is still high, and the infection is diversified, which is the focus of current prevention and control.
