The basic meaning of “port” in modern Chinese common language is port, but its original meaning is the river that connects rivers and lakes. The meaning is mainly retained in place names. Such place names are mainly distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Hubei provinces. The geographical distribution is consistent from ancient to modern, and is consistent with the geographical scope of ancient Wu language and ancient Chu language. Therefore, “Hong Kong” may have originated from the ancient Wu language and spread to the ancient Chu language. It belongs to Wu Chu dialect and has been lost for the earlier textbooks. The northern boundary of the place name distribution for the ancient Huaihe River, which may be used as an example of ancient North Wu language.
