杜威(1859~1952)在一生92年中亲见了美国社会的许多变化。他见到现代合营的大企业从早期的资本主义个人小的投机事业里新兴起来。他也见到劳工运动的长成。杜威出生时,美国社会的风俗习惯和生活方式还带着农村气息,可是他看到现代技术把乡村变成都市。评价和分辨美国生活里的这些变化是杜威社会哲学的重要部分。民主文明带来一些难以避免和不可缺少的东西。它也带来一些副产品,但是因为对于特殊利益集团有利而被保存下来。杜威就想把这两类东西加以分辨。杜威对于社会理论的兴趣是他的早期思想表现
Dewey (1859 ~ 1952) met many changes in American society throughout his life. He saw the emergence of modern joint ventures from the early days of petty speculation in capitalist individuals. He also saw the growth of the labor movement. When Dewey was born, the customs and lifestyles of the American community also carried a rural atmosphere, but he saw that modern technology turned villages into cities. Evaluating and resolving these changes in American life is an important part of Dewey’s social philosophy. Democratic civilization brings something that is hard to avoid and indispensable.
