John Hawkes was born in 1925 in Stanford, Connecticut, USA. He was a Harvard student and after World War II he had traveled to Italy and Germany as an ambulance driver for the US Army Field Service, before returning to college to continue his studies and writing. His first two published works (“Hustle and Culprit”) were written by his undergraduate at Harvard University. After graduating in 1949, Hawks taught while writing. He was at Harvard University, Stanford University, and recently went to teach at Brown University. In 1951 he published a comic book “Beetle Leg” that imitated the western novels, and in 1954 published two novels, “Goose on the Graveyard” and “Owl.” Other novels include “Trap” (1961), “The Second Skin” (1964), Blood Orange (1971), Death, Sleeping and Travelers (1974) 1976), Passionate Artists (1979) and Virginia, her two lives (1982). Hawks also wrote other genres of literature, such as poetry and drama, but first he was a novelist.
