Objective To understand the prevalence of schistosomiasis infection in rivers and lakes in the current social and economic conditions in rural areas and to provide evidence for the development of schistosomiasis control measures in line with the characteristics of such areas. Methods Random sampling method was used to randomly select 500 residents living in Yangtze River above 5 years old in Sanlian Village from June to September in late 2002 and early December in early 2002 respectively. Number of eggs, the village of all cattle cotton hatching method to check whether the infection, to determine the spring, summer and autumn different stages of human and animal schistosomiasis. Results Overall, the population infection rate was 12.93% in summer, significantly higher than that in spring (4.23%) and autumn (2.69%), slightly higher in spring than in autumn, but the difference was insignificant. The infection rate of summer in different gender, occupation and educational level was significantly higher than that in spring and autumn, except that the farmer’s spring was significantly higher than that of autumn, the other spring and autumn had no significant difference. The infection rate of patients in autumn was the highest (178.14 ± 147.44), followed by summer (127.03 ± 186.52) and lowest in spring (18.96 ± 13.54). Cattle infection rate in summer (42.62%) was significantly higher than that in spring (7.41%) and autumn (1.75%), but slightly higher in spring than in autumn, but the difference was not significant. Conclusion The main seasons of schistosomiasis infection in rivers and streams are the lowest in summer and autumn.
