As an alternative to traditional multicast technologies, application layer multicast has been widely studied. This paper defines the stability factor and standardizes the network delay to quantify and evaluate the impact of congestion on the performance of the extended tree in peer-to-peer networks. A stochastic link model is proposed to describe the congestion in the extended tree, and the relevancy factor is introduced to express the correlation between adjacent links. The simulation results show that, even in the case of high link congestion probability, increasing the correlation between links, the extended tree will become more stable. This statistical model is also applicable to the congestion control protocol that guides the design of multicast at the application level.
