王雷确实很幸运,每一步都踩到了点上。读书时赶上了好时候,本科考入美院油画系第二画室,当时几乎是两个老师带一个学生。读研究生时,成为丁一林老师第一个,也是那年招的唯一一个研究生,赶在美院扩招之前,受到了最后的精英式教育。王雷卖第一张画是在2006年,卖的是从边疆“放逐”回来之后画的《叼羊图》,那时他刚研究生毕业。2005年,艺术品市场突然火了,王雷赶上了中国当代艺术品市场第一波行情,除了《叼羊图》,其《生生不息》等一系列作品都被买走了。当代艺术市场起来之后,王雷得到一批藏家的青睐,在经济上不用过多顾虑。而且他的藏家都是长期的,这也保证了他能够专心创作,不受太多外在因素的干扰。从本科毕业时的《民工组画》到现在的《九歌》,画大画一直是他的习惯,从来没有为哪个藏家改变
