In 1973, computer-controlled calculating tomography (CT) was introduced to the United States, and its value and cost have been the focus of debate. In order to successfully use the CT, it is important to understand some relevant factors. With a scan time of less than 18 seconds, the patient can hold their breath, greatly reducing the effects of breathing and heartbeats, and improving the quality of image analysis of the chest. However, the CT scan is a series of cross-sectional images. The doctors applying this technique must understand this foundation and be thoroughly familiar with the anatomy of the chest cross-section.
