Objective: To investigate the effect of hematuria on cytology and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in detection of bladder tumor. Methods: From January 2009 to June 2013, 164 patients with suspected bladder cancer were examined by urine cytology, FISH, upper urinary tract imaging and cystoscopy, biopsy or (and) cut. The effect of hematuria on cytology and FISH false positive rate and false negative rate was compared. Results: The false positive rates of hematuria and hematuria were 14.3% and 20.9% respectively (χ2 = 0.645, P = 0.422), the false negative rates were 21.4% and 39.1% respectively (χ2 = 2.618, P = 0.106) The false positive rates were 19.0% and 20.9%, respectively (χ2 = 0.047, P = 0.828). The false negative rates were 30.3% and 30.4% respectively (χ2 = 0.002, P = 0.967). Conclusion: Hematuria does not affect the results of cytology and FISH in detecting bladder tumors.
