近日,在国内媒体上常出现“底线”这个词,例如,在“非典”一线工作的医生说:“我们要尽全力减轻病人的症状,减少死亡,这是我们医务工作者的底线。”又如某记者推测某城市“接收和医治SARS病人的底线大约是六千人。”再比如“坚持一个中国是我们的底线。”改革开放以来,汉语中出现许多新词,其中不少是借自外语,“底线”一词是汉语中原先就有的呢,还是由英语的“bottom line”翻译过来的呢?究竟两者有没有关系?是否可以互译呢? “bottom line”原义是指财务账目表上最下面的那一行或那一行上写的表示盈亏的数目。英语的定义是“the final line on a company's accountingstatement that shows profit or loss that the companymakes at the end of a given period of time aftereverything has been calculated”。例:①The bottom
