王晓涓打来电话说,《宁波人家》出版了,请我参加首发式,我一口答应:一定!
这本书,是她人生的又一次出发!
晓涓是我大学里的同事,她在学报编辑部当编辑,这工作有点清闲。我教写作,隔三差五拿了学生习作跑进那寂寞的房间。我俩很谈得来。她思维活泼,待人真诚,而且挺有才华。我当时就估摸着,这样的人,是不可能久困于此的。
果然,上世纪90年代末她下海去开办了一个广告公司。听说经营有方,公司风生水起盈利不少。原以为,她就这样朝着企业家的路顺风顺水走下去了,说不准,一不小心,就上了福布斯富豪榜。谁知,命运却与她开了个严酷的玩笑……她的丈夫林洪在一次参加电视台航拍任务时出事了!林洪命大,在直升机爆炸的最后一刻被人拖了出来。
当我得知这个消息急急打电话过去时,她的声音是嘶哑的。除了苍白的安慰,所有的外人其实无法再做什么,炼狱般的精神痛苦都得由她扛着。
正是这场灾难彻底改变了她以往的生活。一年后,丈夫重新回到工作岗位,她却无意再打理她的公司,原本快乐无忧的她,突然开始严肃地思考人生的价值与意义。那段日子,我听说她经常拿着个照相机出国,在一个陌生的地方住下来,一个月,甚至更长的日子。大家谁也不知她在想什么。
三年前的一天,她突然给我打来了电话,说想做一件有意义的事,要“通过一本书凝固宁波人流动着的家庭生活,定格宁波这座城市在历史长河中的一个表情瞬间”,要“留一些记忆给未来”。
原来,这就是她思考了这么多日子后的一个决定!
这个决定跟名利无关,但是跟一个城市有关,跟心灵有关,跟历史有关。这就是放在面前的这本《宁波人家》。
《宁波人家》的价值在哪儿?
在摄影本身吗?书中的摄影,没有《时代广场的胜利日》那样海军士兵激吻陌生护士的疯狂喜悦,没有《她叫玛格丽特马瑟》那样风姿绰约的人体的动容情怀,更没有《枪》那样的11岁纽约小男孩的震撼狰狞,有的只是很随意、很自由、很家常的镜头。那么是胜在图片的讲解说明吗?不,除了个别的被采访者的文字很严谨很文艺外,大多数的文字直白、朴素、口语,甚至有些不通。
但是,恰恰是这率真的两者的结合,构成了《宁波人家》独特的价值—坦诚、自信、不做作,让我们看到了这个城市生活着的人们林林总总的生存状态与心情,告诉你:人们都在奔向什么?什么是他们值得为之奔波的命运?

“害怕的事情是有一天突然变成穷光蛋”—这是一位全职太太的真实心声,就像是夜半私语,被摄影者敏锐地捕捉到。
“这些年一个人在外面很寂寞”—这是一位新宁波人的纠结,因为他是一个发型师,每天工作的时间长达12小时,枯燥乏味的两点一线,上班和回家睡觉。
“生活就是把冷水变成热水做成饭,只要够吃就好了”—这是一个清洁工的大白话,很简朴也很无奈。摄影者说服了他好久,这个苏北汉子才愿意搂着小孙子让她在寒酸的家中拍下了那张照片。
—令人怦然心动的是,即使某些文字里透着忧伤与无奈,所有画面则无一例外是温暖的、宁静的,包括一对瞎子老夫妻,哪怕他们看不见光亮,天黑了,却一定要亮灯。这就是晓涓的美学追求:可以忧伤,可以艰难,可以失败,但一定要明亮。这就是她带着问题走遍大街小巷听到的真实的心声;这也是摄影者自己对生活对内心本真的解读;这是这部作品打动人的最根本的原因。
形式,是她成功的又一因素。在这部摄影集中,你很难说清你更喜欢的是文字还是照片。我们可以肯定,如果没有这些丰富的、放松的、剖露内心真实的文字,照片可能就没有强烈的冲击力;相反,如果没有这些观照主人公生存状态的照片,文字也就失去了情感直观的依托。正在于作者运用了超越传统的摄影方法,巧妙地让两者取长补短相辅相成,才成就了这么一件独特的作品。它使这本摄影作品成了138个活动着的故事,成了我们时代的一面面明镜。
独特的作品必然有着独特的魅力。作者大胆洞察外界与捕捉内心的敏锐表现,不仅留下许多宝贵的记忆给未来,不仅会因她的价值标准在现实世界中留下应有的地位,而且,她更为今天的宁波提供了真实的社会调查,任何一个有兴趣或有必要了解宁波民生的人,任何一个有志于文学创作的人,都可以从中得到启发。

Photos Mirror Everyday Life of People in Ningbo

The other day Wang Xiaojuan phoned me and invited me to attend the launching ceremony of her newly published collection of photographs entitled People of Ningbo, I did not hesitate to say yes, as I knew the book marked a new beginning of her life.
Xiaojuan used to be my colleague at the university, working as an editor for the university’s academic journal. As a teacher of creative writing, I often visited her at her office, bringing students’ assignments to her office to discuss these essays with her. I enjoyed discussions with her and I was deeply impressed by her sincerity and insights. I thought to myself that such a talented woman would not stay long in the position as the job posed no challenge to her. I was right. In the late 1990s, she resigned and started an advertising business. After learning that her business was flourishing, I thought that her future was guaranteed and that her name might eventually be on a fortune list one day. However, her husband, a photographer, was seriously injured in a helicopter accident. He was pulled out just before the helicopter exploded. When I heard of the accident, I called her immediately. Her voice sounded coarse. I knew I could do nothing to ease her suffering. Fortunately her husband pulled through.
The accident changed her life forever. A year later, her husband went back to work as a photographer again, but she was unable to find fun in business. She traveled and photographed a lot and stayed away from us. For a long while, friends scarcely heard from her and knew almost nothing about what was going on inside her heart.
About three years ago, she telephoned me all of a sudden, saying that she was going to do a book of photographs that would focus on the everyday life of the residents in Ningbo. She wanted to capture facial expressions of the city in this moment of history and to leave some memories for future. I concluded that it was a decision after soul-searching over such a long time.
Three years later the book is on my desk, a book about a city, hearts, and history.
Each of the 138 photographs in the collection relates a story. Judging from the art and aesthetics of these photographs, none can be compared with the celebrated photographic masterpieces I have seen somewhere else and the people and events in most of the photographs look even casual and ordinary. However, brief notes to these photographs offer very good accounts, but the way they were written isn’t exciting either. Most notes are straightforward, simple and colloquial in style. Some may need editing and correction grammatically. However, the photos and notes combine to create a special visual-literary value, reflecting frankness, confidence, and simplicity. The combination of photos and notes is the secret formula behind the success of the book. The moments Xiaojuan captured on her camera truthfully portray people’s everyday and attitudes. Through those photographs, Xiaojuan shows what people in Ningbo are willing to pay for a life they want.
In a brief note, two intellectuals talk about life and they abstain from talking about ideals. A homemaker says she fears to lose everything in her life one day. A hairdresser, working 12 hours a day, says he leads an extremely lonely life away from home all these years. This is probably a life he intensely dislikes but has to lead in order to have a future. A street sweeper defines his life this way: life is a process of turning cold water to hot water and cooking a meal and it is a good life if one has enough to eat. He was one of the most reluctant to pose for Xiaojuan. After a long persuasion, he agreed to let her photograph him and his grandson in the shabby room where they lived.
Though many notes pulsate with sadness and despair, the photographs are generally tranquil and heart-warming. An old couple are both blind, but they still use lights in the evening. That reflects Xiaojuan’s aesthetics: sorrow, hardship and defeat are probably unavoidable in everyday life, but the heart needs light. The photographs answer the questions she has after her endless meandering through the city.
With the collection, Wang Xiaojuan has finished what she started. The photographs provide a special perspective and express her heart and soul. The precious memories are results of her interesting investigation into present-day Ningbo.
