According to the Ministry of Finance’s report on customs statistics, Japan’s imports of textiles (including textile raw materials and clothing) exceeded US$10 billion for the first time in 1987, a sharp increase of 49.8% from the previous year, and caused Japan’s textile trade deficit to reach US$3.404 billion. This deficit indicates that Japan has become a major importer of textiles. In comparison with the first eight months of 1987 and the same period in 1986, in Japan’s textile imports (calculated by amount), yarns increased by 35%, machine fabrics increased by 21%, and reprocessed products increased by 67%. Among the reprocessed products, the increase in clothing was particularly significant, which was an increase of 72% over the same period of last year. The specific items increased more with women’s underwear and knitted outerwear.
