Since 2009, Zhejiang Publishing United Group (ZPUG) has been publishing books on a wide range of subjects including healthcare, agriculture, culture, education, livelihood and tourism for African book market. Collaborating local partners add up to more than ten countries, with publishing languages of English, French, Spanish and Swahili.
Publications review
The French edition of Prevention and Treatment of Common Diseases in Africa, co-published by the Zhejiang Science and Technology Science Press the Sahara Press of Mali was based on the over forty years’ practice of Chinese medical assisting team in Africa. It was believed to have offered great help for Mali people to improve their chronic health habits. So far, this book has published multiple editions like Mali, Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Kenya, and Gabon in four languages, namely English, French, Spanish and Swahili.
Zhejiang Science and Technology Press worked together with the African Agricultural Research Institute, Nanjing Agricultural University (NJAU) on book series of African agricultural technology development to publish multiple editions for Mali, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Each version was compiled according to the country’s climate, crop variety and agricultural structure, involving fields like crop farming, breeding, husbandry and fishery. Authors were agriculture experts from both China and Africa and most of those books were written under their joint efforts.
ZPUG has further expanded its cooperation fields with Africa to history, economy, culture, education, science and technology. It has published the multilingual version of Sino-Africa Exchange History Series, the English version of Chinese-Swahili Classified Dictionary, Oral Chinese-Swahili Handbook, Business Chinese, Chinese Picture Storybook, the French version of Chinese Fairytales and Idiom Stories, Primary Mathematics, the French and English versions of China in 30 Years, the Swahili version of A Beautiful Daughter-In-Law Era, and book series on “ China and I” and “African Tourism Culture”.
Publishing plan ahead
ZPUG will sign cooperation agreement with a number of African countries on co-publication, which may also expand to rights dealings in the future. It will develop publishing channels together with African presses and carry out book marketing and book distribution, especially in subjects of literature, children and lifestyle.
There’ll also be co-translation projects with a focus on literary works. The project of “Classical Zhejiang”, Chinese movies and television plays will be exported more to Africa.
Furthermore, with a consideration of African countries’ advancement in mobile communication and mobile payment, ZPUG also plans to cooperate with the local mobile companies and Chinese-funded companies to promote mobile reading in Africa.
