The largest events of the Umbria-Marche earthquake sequence in 1997 were the M_W5.7 (00:33 GMT) and M_W6.0 (09:40 GMT) seismostorms on September 26, causing large-scale extensive damage around the epicenter and Ground fissures. We present an ERS-SAR differential interferogram in which nine fringes are visible in and around the Colfiorito basin, corresponding to a 25 cm coseismic surface displacement. GPS data show that the maximum horizontal displacement is 14 ± 1.8cm, the maximum settlement of 24 ± 3cm. We use these geodetic and seismic parameters to estimate the fault geometry and strike-slip distribution. The simulated fault depth and maximum slip amplitude are 6.5 km and 47 cm for the first earthquake and 7 km and 72 cm for the second earthquake, respectively, consistent with the data obtained from the seismic data.
