Both roads, railways, open-pit mines, quarries, dam sites and spillways encounter the stability problem of rock slopes. Rock slopes are different from soil slopes. Soil is composed of non-sticking particles, which can be considered as a more uniform and continuous medium. The rock mass, on the other hand, is basically an inhomogeneous discontinuous medium consisting of rocks separated by many discontinuous structures.
