社会保障是社会发展与进步的重要内容，是社会文明的重要标志。马克思、恩格斯在批判资产阶级生产方式给社会带来贫困、伤残、失业的同时，并没有简单否定资产阶级采取的诸如“官方济贫事业”类的社会保障所起的安全阀作用，他们分析了社会保障的阶级属性、资金来源，提出了社会主义社会保障的原则性设想。建立科学、完善的社会保障制度，乃是社会主义社会的题中应有之义，是发展社会主义市场经济过程中的一项重要且紧迫的任务，而研究马克思主义社会保障观则是其中的主要前提。
