The traditional view that the heart is the place where life and love are, therefore, the social psychological phenomenon of heart transplantation arouses great concern. The authors hypothesize that “denial” is a pervasive psycho-adaptive mechanism after transplant surgery and is used to investigate the psychological responses of survivors to the transplanted heart and its donors after 20 heart transplant recipients. Here, the denial is defined as a conscious or subconscious rejection of some or all of the fait accompli, in order to mitigate the effects of fear, anxiety or other unpleasantness. Methods: 30 to 90 days after heart transplantation, the patients were checked for their mental status. Totally 20 patients were enrolled, of which 19 were white and 2 were women. non-
