Wang Xiaoqiu’s “A Chinese Grand Prix to the World in Late Qing Dynasty” is an excellent historical book. It describes a history of more than 120 years ago when the Qing government sent 12 officials to inspect other countries in the world. Faced with the intrusiveness of the Western powers, the Qing government was very weak and dazed. With the desire to strengthen its national power, the Qing government sent 12 middle-level officials with expertise in 1887 (13 years of the Qing emperor Guangxu) and spent two years in Asia Europe and the Americas, respectively, visited more than 20 countries including Japan, France and the United States. These tours conducted an in-depth investigation of the geography of the country to which they visited, the political system and educational status, and wrote informative reports for the government. However, the achievements of their investigation have not been given due consideration by the Qing government.
