Patients who develop pelvic recurrence after treatment of colorectal cancer using standard methods do not survive longer than 10 months, and these patients also have poor life skills. Dr. Herrera reported the results of photodynamic therapy for colorectal cancer. Photodynamic therapy consists of two components: (1) Red light that penetrates tissue. (2) Non-toxic sensitizer, which is preferentially accumulated in the tumor after it is injected into the body. Photodynamic therapy utilizes the sensitometric properties of hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) or its purifier D hematoporphyrin ether (DHE) to detect malignant tissue.
