The dried roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bung. This ancient Chinese medicine is used to treat bleeding, menstrual disorders and miscarriage. It is known to contain abietane-type diterpenes such as tanshinone I, cry-potanshinone, and tanshinone VI. In this paper, the characterization of tanshinone and ferruginol, polar tanshinones in different tissues was determined using an equivalent normal-phase HPLC. Quantification was performed by reversed-phase HPLC. Using these methods, the production of active tanshinones in cultured cells and in regenerated plants can be studied.
