For COD (chemical oxygen demand) analysis, silver and mercury salts were used. Since mercury accumulates rapidly into the food chain and is very toxic to fish and wildlife, it must be removed before it is poured into the water. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended a method developed by the Robert A. Taft Water Quality Research Center to remove mercury from a variety of wastes. However, this method does not provide a chance for application to regenerated mercury and silver, and its effect is poor and the operation cost is high.
