The “Sea” by John Banville tells the story of an ethical tragedy caused by the superposition of multiple family ethics. This essay, from the perspective of literary ethics criticism, sorts out the crisis and construction of the protagonist Max Morton’s identity and the ethical confusion that occurred in Grace’s family. It considers that the normal lack of love and the confused love The resulting ethical confusion is the underlying cause of the tragedy that led to the loss of Max’s life and the apparent tragedy of the death of Grace’s twins. This story, which happened at the seaside, tells the reader: Feelings like the sea can accommodate everything and destroy everything. Whether it is the love of parents or the love of lovers, it is only in an orderly state that it is conducive to building a correct identity and a positive life.
