Mechanical ball diameter instrument is the most widely used instrument to measure the radius of curvature of the instrument. The specific design varies by purpose and desired accuracy. But either way, it consists of two main parts: 1. The device that determines the sphere under test: It is a ring that defines a known radius of a part of the sphere. 2. Measure the sag height of the part of the sphere. From the measured vector height and the radius of the known spherical portion, the radius of curvature of the measured spherical surface is calculated. A typical example of a precision ball diameter meter is the ring ball diameter meter shown in FIG. 1.
