The “motivation of consciousness” is an important basis for many philosophers to uphold their freedom of will. According to the relevant research of modern psychology, this paper points out that consciousness is not free to control our choice of behavior as some philosophers think. The reflection and understanding of human consciousness on the self and the outside world can not be changed arbitrarily. But by a variety of physiological and psychological factors have obvious tendency and certainty. Physiological and psychological factors that influence the tendencies of consciousness mainly include: 1, the correlation between events and self; 2, the needs of individuals; 3, personal life experiences; 4, personality traits of individuals; 5, the cognitive structure and ability of individuals. The interweaving and integration of these factors on individuals determines to a large extent the perception and judgment of one person on the outside world, which also determines one’s behavior choices. Therefore, in each particular event, as these factors are relatively well defined, the individual’s choice of behavior is always pushed to a generally defined direction by the combined forces of these factors. Therefore, the notion that the active role of consciousness can easily change one’s perception, judgment, and choice of behavior is not correct.
