After years of decay, the U.S. auto industry finally made its comeback last year. Detroit Motor City’s three giants - General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, the three major car companies, respectively, profits of 24.6,25.2 and 2.4 billion US dollars. What made the U.S. auto industry the most proud is that they not only started to recapture their domestic automobile market squeezed by Japanese rivals for more than 10 years but also increased their exports to the Japanese market. In the fourth quarter of last year, Chrysler made a profit of 777 million U.S. dollars, mainly from exports to Japan. More than a decade ago, the U.S. auto industry was retreated to Japan by no means. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, fantastic cars in Japan and Western Europe swept into the United States at an annual rate of over 230 vehicles, occupying a quarter of the U.S. auto market.
