Objective To understand the pollution of lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic in Handan food. Methods According to the food safety risk monitoring program of Hebei Province in 2012 and 2013, a total of 439 samples of 10 kinds of foods were collected from the urban area of Handan City and the major farmers markets in the surrounding counties for the detection of lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. Results The total detection rates of lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic in 439 food samples were 32.12%, 54.90%, 45.56% and 34.29% respectively. The pass rates were 99.01%, 100%, 99.01% and 100% respectively. Conclusions The pollution of harmful elements in the foodstuffs sold in Handan City is generally lighter, but there are excessive amounts of lead and mercury in the samples of live meat, cereals and their milled products, fresh vegetables and edible fungi and products, and the supervision should be strengthened. Reduce the risk of harmful elemental contamination of food heavy metals.
