正当各界注目于美国对阿富汗的攻击行动以及“9·11恐怖事件”满一个月之际,北京时间2001年10月11日晚间,瑞典皇家学院宣布将本年度诺贝尔文学奖授予英籍印度裔特里尼达和多巴哥作家V.S.奈保尔(V.S.Naipaul)。奈保尔1932年8月17日出生于特里尼达和多巴哥的一个印度家庭。18岁时,他以奖学金进入英国牛津大学,攻读英国文学,取得学位后迁居伦敦,服务于英国广播公司(BBC)。奈保尔1957年以小说《神秘按摩师》开始写作生涯,此作即获得该年的“莱思纪念奖”。此后奈保尔开始稳定的小说创作,作品包括《神秘按摩师》《毕斯华士先生的屋子》《黑暗地带》《模仿人》《身在自由邦》《游击队》《抵达之谜》以及《世界之道》等。他的作品获奖无数,包括“毛姆小说奖”“霍桑登奖”“史密斯奖”等,1971年更赢得了英国最具声望的“布克奖”。他是当今世界上最受推崇的英语作家之一,《纽约时报》书评宣称:“他是世界作家、语言大师、眼光独到的小说奇才。”奈保尔有着印度婆罗门的血统,出生于英属殖民地特里尼达和多巴哥,却生活在英国,用英语写作。受到多种文化的影响,是在后殖民文化、印度文化和欧洲文化的冲突和交织中成长起来的。他的特殊背景使他更多关注先进与落后文化的差异,作品有深刻的批判性质。从某个角度可以说他是世界性的、流浪的、没有特别的根的作家。英国方面在对奈保尔获得2001年诺贝尔文学奖的评价中说:“奈保尔的作品中经常描写的是后殖民时期第三世界的政治社会面貌,其中流露出其无法认同其祖国印度与英国的挣扎……”
Just as the attention of all walks of life in the United States attack on Afghanistan and the “September 11 terrorist incident” a month, Beijing time in the evening of October 11, 2001, the Swedish Royal Academy announced this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to the British Indian special VSNaipaul, a writer in Rinidad and Tobago. Naipaul was born on 17 August 1932 in Trinidad and Tobago, an Indian family. At the age of 18, he entered the University of Oxford with a scholarship to study English literature. After graduating from degree, he moved to London to serve the BBC. Naipaul started his writing career in 1957 with the novel “Mystery Masseur,” and was awarded the “Reith Memorial Award” of the year. Since then, Naipaul has started a stable novel creation. His works include The Mystery Masseur, Mr. Biershwaner’s House, The Dark Area, Imitation Man, The Free State, The Guerrillas, The Enigma of Arrival, Road “and so on. His works have won numerous awards, including the Maugam Fiction Award, the Hawthorne Award and the Smith Award. In 1971, he won the most prestigious Booker Award in Britain. He is one of the most respected English-language writers in the world today, and the New York Times Book Review states: ”He is a world writer, linguistic master, and a visionary novelist.“ Naipaul, of the Indian Brahmin origin, was born in the British colonies Trinidad and Tobago, but living in the UK, writing in English. Influenced by many cultures, it grew up in the conflicts and interlaces of post-colonial culture, Indian culture and European culture. His special background led him to pay more attention to the differences between advanced and backward cultures, and the work has a profound and critical nature. From a certain point of view he can be said to be a worldwide, wandering, no special root writer. In her assessment of Naipaul’s award of the 2001 Nobel Prize for Literature, the British side said: ”What is often described in Naipaul’s work is the political and social appearance of the Third World in the post-colonial period, revealing that it can not identify with India and Britain Struggling ... "
