The history of the practice of national translation is an integral part of national narrative. The “foreign translator” study in the practice of national translators is a national social science subject that integrates macro, meso and micro in one. The macro level involves the theoretical research on the concept, essence, system and mode of national translation practice. The meso-level is mainly about the study of the relationship between the historical context of national translation practice and the cultural identity of foreign translators and their translation behavior. It is manifested as a case study of foreign translator Shabo Li and his representative translated into multiple identities of “foreign experts”, “Chinese citizens” and “professional translators.” This article reviews the latest progress in this cross-disciplinary perspective and clarifies the theoretical and instructive value it finds for the writing of the history of national translation.
