Two scientists in St. Petersburg, Florida, described how the body’s defense against bacteria and viruses attack, and how it plays a role in triggering heart disease. The purpose of the researchers is to understand how the artery wall is damaged. This type of injury occurs in the coronary arteries, causing the lipids to accumulate progressively around the lesion surface, eventually blocking the blood flow and causing a heart attack. Douglas B Cines, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is here to attend the American Heart Association Symposium
