I know! Chuguyiv will be a great center of southern Russian art and will be famous for its creations all over the world! So let us direct the noblest impulses of our souls towards this center and create a hearth for all the best things existing in the human soul!
——Ilya Repin

Repin’s wife Natalia was visiting Chuguyiv for the first time, and commented on the experience “Ah, Chuguyiv, Chuguyiv—what a great location! Now I understand how an artist could be born here.”
Repin treasured memories of life in his hometown of Chuguyiv and of Ukraine. His last paintings “The Black Sea Free Land” and the “Gopak” are dedicated to his native land.
Repin’s life came to end on September 29, 1930, and according to the wishes that he expressed in his will, he was buried in the garden of the “Penaty” Museum in Finland near a hill that he called the “Chuguyiv Hill”.
The people of Chuguyiv still remember and celebrate the life of their native son and great countryman—Ilya Repin. Numerous sites and tourist attractions connected with Repin are preserved throughout Chuguyiv. In 1944, to recognize the 100th anniversary of Repin’s birth, a monument was erected in a new park to acknowledge the site of the artist’s birth and early life with his family in the Osinovka region. The 100th anniversary was widely celebrated in the country in spite of the hardships of the Second World War. In 1953 a Repin art school for children was opened in Chuguyiv. A famous Soviet era sculptor—M. Manizer—created a monument to Repin in the center of town in 1956.
There is also a museum in a local school in the Osinovka region of Chuguyiv where the “Repin Countrymen” club has been in operation since 1962. In 1969, a museum dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Repin’s birth was opened at the previous Repin family residence on the former Nikitskaya Street. One of the secondary schools in Chuguyiv is even named after Repin.
