The Taihangshan piedmont fault zone was studied from geological and geophysical data obtained in recent years, and some new recognition was got. The fault zone initiated in the Mesozoic time and mainly formed in Eogene. It consists of a series of left-lateral arranged faults striking NE-NNE. The structure and movement of the fault zone show a clear segmentation. The north-central segment of it is a large-scale detachment fault comprising the Baoding-Shijiazhuang fault and other faults. This segment extends horizontally about 70 km, with a horizontal extensional separation of about 17km and a vertical offset of 5,000-7,000m since Eogene. The fault zone was developed largely in the upper crust, so it does not be a deep-seated fault. Its Quaternary movement was not strong and has not direct genetic relation with seismic activity. But its southern and northern segments intersect with other seismotectonic zones of different directions, and have significance in study of regional seismotectonics and earthquake prediction.
