Preface The so-called 2n gametes are pollen or eggs that have the number of plant somatic chromosomes. It is now clear that the occurrence of non-dominating gametes (2n pollen) is widespread in the plant kingdom (Skiebe 1969, Harlan & Wet 1975). For example, the production of 2n pollen or 2n eggs has been found successively in Satina & Blakeslee (1935), in maize (Rhoades & Dempsey 1966) and in potato (Mok & Peloquin, 1975a) 2n gametes were found (JR Myers et al., 1984).
