目前最早的戏曲摘汇本《风月(全家)锦囊》,重刊于嘉靖三十二年,其性质实为明初以来南曲曲唱渐次发展到嘉靖时的舞台荟萃,从而较全面地反映了当时南曲戏文的发展,这一过程实包括教坊正声的衰落、民间新声的兴起以及二者之间的相互交融。可以说,该书之编选,无论就编撰之内容、范围还是其宗旨而言,与稍前或同时之《雍熙乐府》等曲选都相映成趣。后者透露了正、嘉间曲唱领域追慕两京教坊正声、复古尚雅的倾向;前者则重今尚俗、积极摘汇地方新声,而诱露出当时演剧领域更具生命力的一面。
