一、靖边县处于陕甘宁盆地大气田的腹地,长庆石油勘探局在以靖边县为中心的3200平方公里范围内,控制天然气储量3000亿立方米,探明储量达1373亿立方米(国家储量委员会批准)。随着勘探范围的扩大,前景将会更好,靖边气田不仅是国内最大的整装气田,而且属世界级的大气田。二、靖边县地下还储有丰富的石油资源。储油面积约占全县总面积的三分之一,石油储量为4000—5000万吨;同时探明侏罗纪煤层储量150—200亿吨。有重要的开采价值。天然气、石油、煤炭等多种富集资源同处一地,实属罕见。三、靖边县人工植树造林成绩显著,多次被评为全国造林先进县。截至1991年底人工造林保存面积320万亩,森林覆盖率达42.9％,居陕北之首。
