千百年来,塔里木河通过自身的流动,滋养了塔里木盆地的文明。在塔河上游和中下游生活着以鱼为食,以鱼猎为业的水居部族——罗布人和刀郎人的部落。他们很少吃粮食,主要以鱼、虾、水禽和水生植物为生。为了渔猎,他们砍伐胡杨木制造独木舟,由于古老的胡杨树具有外坚内空的特点,最坚实致密的部分在树干的外周,罗布人和刀郎人很容易利用粗笨的工具将树心掏空,制成简陋实用的渔舟,简称“卡盆”。
