Constructed and expanded according to the federal interstate highway system standards, the expressway is costly and has a detrimental effect on the environment. However, due to traffic congestion, only a few travelers can experience the advantages of fast driving. Explore another idea of road design - designing roads that are more compact, or more lanes but with narrower lane widths. Comparing with conventional design and compact design, the expressway speed, traffic capacity and travel time index show that the compact design has more obvious advantages when the vehicles are in a queue at peak time. Due to the inconclusive effect of compact design on road safety, it is advisable to set a lower speed limit and take measures to prohibit speeding. Finally, it is pointed out that the compact design can increase the traffic capacity of the road to ease the traffic congestion, so its scope of application has been expanded.
