Jack London’s northern novels and Updike’s “Rabbit’s Four Novels” have two obvious common groundpoints in the content of the works, all of which show the author’s evasion tendency and attention to death. At the same time, they also show different ways of avoiding and dying because of the different times in which the two authors lived. By contrasting the reasons, ways and outcomes of the two writers in avoiding reality, and analyzing the authors’ understanding and writing of death, we can see that Jack London mainly attributes death to the result of confrontation with nature, while Updike thinks The death in modern society is mainly spiritual. The connection between Updike and Jack London on evasion and death can outline the changes in American society.
