The first session of the International Kimberley Conference was held in South Africa and Lesotho from September 17 to October 8, 1974. Nearly 200 participants represented 20 countries in person. Participants at the conference were field geologists engaged in the discovery and excavation of kimberlite as a natural diamond mineral and petrographers, geochemists and physicists interested in the theoretical issues of kimberlite. The eruption of the kimberlite in southern Africa and elsewhere sent a series of special rocks to the surface from the mantle and crustal basement. Through the study of these rocks, a great deal of information about mantle petrology has been obtained. However, to fully explain these mantle samples requires us to clarify the origin of the kimberlite itself. The main purpose of the meeting was to provide delegates with the opportunity to observe the open air
