President Coolidge’s statement,”The business of America is business,”still points to an important truth today—that business institutions have more prestige(威望) in American society than any other kind of organization, including the government. Why do business institutions possess this great prestige?
One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the idea of competition than other institutions in society. Since competition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans, competitive business institutions are respected. Competition is not only good in itself, it is also the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and hard work are protected.
Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly(垄断) of power. In contrast to one, all-powerful government, many businesses compete against each other for profits. Theoretically, if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to competing business which treats its customers more fairly.
Where many businesses compete for the customers’dollars, they cannot afford to treat them like inferiors or slaves.
A contrast is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that it is more supportive of freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people and business leaders are not. Many Americans believe, then, that competition is as important, or even more important, than democracy in preserving freedom.
Competition in business is also believed to strengthen the idea of equality of opportunity. Competition is seen as an open and fair race where success goes to the swiftest person regardless of his or her social class background. Competitive success is commonly seen as the American alternative(二者择一) to social rank based on family background. Business is therefore viewed as an expression of the idea of equality of opportunity rather than the aristocratic(贵族的) idea of inherited privilege.
1. The statement”The business of America is business”probably means “____”.
A. America is a great power in world business
B. Business is of primary concern to Americans
C. The business institutions in America are concerned with commerce
D. Business problems are of great importance to the American government
2. Americans believe that they can realize their personal values only ____.
A. by protecting their individual freedom
B. when given equality of opportunity
C. by way of competition
D. through doing business
3. Who can benefit from business competition? ____.
A. People with ideals of equality and freedom
B. Both business institutions and government
C. Honest businessmen
D. Both businessmen and their customers
4. Government is believed to differ strikingly from business in that government is characterized by ____.
A. its role in protecting basic American values
B. its absolute control of power
C. its democratic way of exercising leadership
D. its function in preserving personal freedom
5. It can be inferred from the passage that the author believes ____.
A. in many countries success often depends on one’s social status
B. businesses in other countries are not as competitive as those in America
C. American businesses are more democratic than those in other countries
D. Americans are more ambitious than people in other countries

The group of tourists walking through Stockholm’s old street never knew what hit them. As they admired Swedish art works in a storefront window, one of their mobile phones chirped(唧唧叫) with an anonymous(匿名的) note:”Try the blue sweaters. They keep you warm in the winter.”
The tourist had just been”bluejacked”—secretly sent a text message using short-range wireless technology called Bluetooth.
The more people get Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones—both sender and receiver need them for this to work—the more there is likely to be mischievous(恶作剧的) messaging.
Websites are already offering tips on bluejacking, and collections of astonished reactions quickly turn up on the Internet. One site, www. bluejacked.com, was set up by a British teenager.
“I bluejacked three or four people,”says 13-year-old Ellie in UK, who runs the site and makes bluejacking a daily affair. Bluetooth has a range of about nine metres. Ellie used it to send a note to a man in a cafe asking how his coffee was and saying that she liked his wife’s glasses.
Ellie says he looked here and there to try to figure out where the message came from, even sending text messages back and forth with his wife, but to no avail.
Bluetooth is fast becoming more common on new mobile phones, though Forrester Research says at present only 9 percent of phones in Europe have such a function.
The technology is handy for people wanting to use wireless headsets with their phones or for sending data by phone to Bluetooth-enabled printers.
When Bluetooth is activated(激活), it seeks out other equipped mobile phones by itself and sets up a link. Bluetooth phones can be set to block anonymous messaging, but people who carry them don’t necessarily know that.

Throughout history mankind has celebrated the plentiful harvest with thanksgiving ceremonies.
Before the establishment of formal religions(信仰、宗教) many ancient farmers believed that their crops contained spirits which caused the crops to grow and die. Many believed that these spirits would be released when the crops were harvested and they had to be destroyed or they would take revenge(报复、报仇) on the farmers who harvested them. Some of the harvest festivals celebrated the defeat of these spirits.
Harvest festivals and thanksgiving celebrations were held by the ancient Greeks, the Romans, the Hebrews, the Chinese, and the Egyptians.
Now I want to say something about Thanksgiving Day in the United States.
In 1621, after a hard and devastating first year in the New World the Pilgrims’(1620年到美洲去的英国移民) fall harvest was very successful and plentiful. There was corn and fruits. The Pilgrims had beaten the odds. They built homes in the wilderness, and they raised enough crops to keep them alive during the long coming winter, and they were at peace with their Indian neighbors. Their Governor, William Bradford, announced a day of thanksgiving that was to be shared by all the colonists(殖民地开拓者) and the neighboring Native American Indians.
The custom of an annually celebrated thanksgiving, held after the harvest, continued through the years. During the American Revolution (late 1770’s) a day of national thanksgiving was suggested by the Continental Congress.
In 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual custom. By the middle of the 19th century many other states also celebrated Thanksgiving Day. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of thanksgiving. Since then each president has issued a Thanksgiving Day statement, usually appointing the fourth Thursday of each November as the holiday.

Dear AGW,
I was shocked to see the articles about Britney Spears. I thought your site was about all kinds of girls getting along and celebrating differences. I came to your site mainly because you did not worship pop artists who set bad examples to girls like all too many teen magazines and sites do. I think Britney Spears is the worst of all. All her songs are about being a helpless girl wanting some guy back in her life. Girls should think that they can be independent and when they find someone truly meaningful in their life, they can worry about”getting hit one more time”. I think Britney Spears encourages girls showing themselves off without any other power except their looks. She makes girls think they can show off to boys in an improper manner. She also sets a bad example to boys. She is making them think they can take any girl they want, and she”should”and”better”show her love back. She is also selling herself to guys, so they start to think it’s okay, that every worthy girl is or should be like her.
I think that guys need to be taught that looks aren’t everything, but when you have a celeb like Britney Spears being worshipped for her looks, it makes them produce a false view. Same for girls. Britney Spears is telling the girls that if you are thin, have or want a guy, wear too much make-up, get plastic surgery and exploit yourself, then you will get a bigtime. She is NOT about accepting yourself, like we should be aiming for. She is, instead saying,”Hey, if you are not perfect, you’d better change it!”The rate of depression, poor body image, and eating disorders in girls is high enough already. We could at least not worship people like Britney Spears!
Thank you for listening.
Sincerely, Natalie

Dear AGW,
I was shocked to see the articles about Britney Spears.
