Exploration on the reform of Mechanical Engineering English Teaching

  Abstract. With the rapid economic development and foreign exchange the contents, teaching methods and other aspects of the professional English course in Higher Vocational Colleges have left behind.Based on Mechanical Engineering English as an example, the paper would make some exploration about the present situation and reform of courses on mechanical engineering English.
  With the introduction of the advanced equipment from foreign countries by many Chinese enterprises, the demand of English for the skilled workers who engage in mechanical operation and maintenance industry has been increasing.However, the present teaching effect of Mechanical Engineering English Teaching in Higher Vocational and Technical Education is not what it should be expected.So it is a highlight point how to improve the educational level of the Professional English.
  1. The present teaching situation and existing problems
  1.1 The curriculum is not reasonable
  As a basic course in Higher Vocational School, The setting time for professional English course is too short.,Generally only a year. Professional English are closely related to professional knowledge. Therefore,it is not realistic to learn Professional English without some corresponding professional knowledge,however,Many schools have arranged mechanical engineering English course in the first semester,which,will cause a great deal of learning difficulty for students.
  1.2 Most students who major in Mechanical Engineering lack interest and confidence in learning English
  First of all, the majority of students English is poor,Secondly, because of the professional English content involves the professional fields of science and technology content, so boring, difficult to understand.So students in English learning is more a lack of confidence, thus no enthusiasm for learning.
  1.3 Professional English machinery has distinct characteristics
  There are always many longer sentences in Mechanical Engineering English, and their patterns are also complex .Moreover,the double predicate, attributive clause, adverbial, past participle are frequently used.These sentences are not only long but also very messy, very difficult to read as well,At the same time, it is difficult for most students to master the professional vocabulary.
  2. Some suggestions about the teaching reform of Mechanical Engineering English
  2.1 Setting up reasonable curriculum
  To Properly arrange each semester teaching for Professional English ,A certain time should be arranged for the general English teaching at first,then the students will begin to study Mechanical Engineering English after they have finished the related basis professional theory, only in that way can they learn the subject efficiently.   2.2 Using materials reasonably and ingeniously
  The contents of the material should not only include the basic professional knowledge, also want to reflect the characteristic of the era of mechanical major,these materials also be various ,in which,professional vocabulary must be rich, and the relevant exercises also should be followed.In the process of teaching, combining the characteristics of teaching materials,teachers should select those relevant contents in which the students are more interested to teach,thus it will further broaden the students' vision, and improve students' reading ability as well as the skills of translation.
  2.3 Arousing the learning enthusiasm of students
  we should focus on the mastery of commonly used words, phrases when We study the professional vocabulary, This will help to greatly reduce the workload of learning Professional English,So as to set up the confidence to learning English well.As is known, it is not only difficult to master the Words and phrases for Professional English, but its number is very great. Zipf's law pointed out:
  According to statistics, 1000 of the most commonly used words, their frequency of use for all the words used number 82%, among them, the most commonly used words in 2000 accounted for 91%, 3000 accounted for 95% of the most commonly used words.Therefore, learning a professional English word, we only need to master 1000-3000 commonly used words, can express or acquiring professional knowledge successfully using english.
