  Host: Back now at 8:21 with the inside scoop on the college application process, timely advice with a deadline to be considered for early decision, at some schools coming up on November 1st. Well, Ted Spencer is the executive director of undergraduate admissions at the University of Michigan. Barbara Gill, is the assistant vice president for undergraduate admissions and enrollment planning at the University of Maryland, and Seth Allen is the vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at Pomona College in Pomona, California. Good morning to ye of big titles.
  Interviewees: Good morning.
  Host: Good morning to you. Let me ask you the question that students ask pretty much all the time, the number one asked question. How does one make the application stand out? Who wants it first? Go, Ted.

  Ted Spencer: Well, let me just start. I think one of the first things students need to do, is to do well in school, take great courses, challenge the 1)curriculum in your high school. And then, do as many things as you can outside of the school, in terms of activities, as long as they’re meaningful.
  Host: Right.
  Ted: And then write a great essay. Tell us who you are.
  Host: OK. That’s a lot! What’s the best thing, what’s the thing that makes an application stand out?
  Barbara Gill: Well, the most important thing is to stand out in a positive way: meet the deadlines, follow the directions. And then also students need to be reflective. They need to think about themselves and they need to be genuine in their application. We want to hear their voices when they apply.
  Host: OK. Seth?
  Seth Allen: I think students need to think about a kind of focus for the application. They don’t have to be all things to the school. They need to be the thing that really reflects best about them and that’ll help them stand out in the process.
  Host: Does applying early help or hurt?
  Seth: Neither. Applying early is a choice that some students may make. I think it’s the wrong choice when students decide they’re going to apply early. They just don’t know where but they know they want to apply early. This needs to be a thoughtful process. It’s an important one. And if students take the time to really do the research, then whether they apply early or they apply later on in regular decision, that’ll be the best choice for them.

  Host: Biggest mistake, Barbara?
  Barbara: Students not using their own voice. Not spending enough time going through the process. And not paying attention to their guidance counselor.
  Host: OK. What’s the part of the 2)transcript that you give most of the attention to?
  Barbara: Quality of courses.
  Ted: Yes, I agree.
  Host: During their high school years?
  Ted: Yes.
  Host: Quality of courses? Agree?
  Seth: Quality of courses.
  Host: All of you?
  Ted: And trends. Upward trends are always better.
  Host: OK. So even if you have bad grades in your sophomore or freshman year?
  Ted: Sure, sure.
  Host: OK, upwards trends is a good thing. OK, also standardized tests. What if you don’t have a good set of scores right off the top?
  Seth: I think it’s important that students then understand they have other opportunities to create a better application. So rather than obsessing about standardized test scores which really should never take more than twice, once to get it over with, and figure out what it’s all about. The second time really to…to do their best on the test.

  塞思:我认为,学生要明白他们还有很多别的机会让自己的申请更出色,这一点很重要。不要一直沉迷在标准化测试的分数中,那些标准化测验其实最好不要参加两次以上,第一次走个过场,熟悉一下它们究竟考什么。第二次,在考试中好好发挥。
  Host: But what if you get it wrong, horribly two times? You can do it a third time, right?
  Seth: Oh, you absolutely can do it a third time, but you need to decide is your energy best spent on trying to improve scores or is it best spent on thinking about your essay, who to write recommendations for you, what you want to say about your activities outside of class.
  Host: What do you want to look for in the essay, Barbara?
  Barbara: Oh, we want to hear their voices. We want to get a sense of who they are. We want them to dig deep and not necessarily try to tell us too much. I think that’s one of the mistakes students make, is they try to tell us too much. They ought to pick one topic which is themselves, and then try to dig deep into that topic so we get a better sense of who they are.
  Host: Tough age to ask that of kids.
  Barbara: Absolutely.
  Host: What would you say about recommendations? Because that’s…that’s an interesting thing.
  Ted: It…it really is. I think that too often students forget about the whole principle of asking someone who really likes you to write a recommendation. And so I think that that’s where you should start.
  Host: All right, somebody who likes you. Well, do me a favor next time, could you make the process any easier? Ted Spencer, Barbara Gill and Seth Allen.
