20世纪初,科举制度的停废使现代教育制度在乡村获得很大发展,同时也导致乡村教育矛盾的不断激化,教育冲突日益激烈。毁学是一种群体性破坏新式教育的暴力行为。清末十年间,毁学事件在各地乡村屡屡发生,几有遍及全国之势,对刚刚起步的乡村教育现代化产生很大影响。几十年中,新、旧教育的冲突始终没有得到很好的解决,一直困扰着中国乡村教育,是导致乡村教育早期现代化步履蹒跚的重要原因之一。
