美国戏剧理论家贝克(George Pierce Baker1866—1935)认为:“一部戏永久的价值在于人物性格刻画。”①在戏剧作品中,具有鲜明个性的人物形象是观众关注的焦点,只有塑造出个性鲜明的人物形象才能产生感人的艺术效果,有了这样富于性格美的人物形象,才能吸引观众去关怀他们的命运,才能随戏剧情节的步步进展感受冲突的尖锐性、领悟事件变化的深奥意义,贝里尼的歌剧《诺尔玛》之所以能够在漫长的音乐历史长河中久演不衰,主要原因就是主人公诺尔玛的音乐形象随着戏剧冲突的逐渐推进所表现出来的悲剧美。
