牙萌出后,釉质表面直接与口腔内唾液接触,依个人口腔内唾液成份,饮食习惯不同,釉质表面将发生各种不同的变化,包括化学和形态学二方面。研究初萌牙表面特征是认识釉质表面在不同年龄阶段形态特征的基础;它在认识龋过程中牙表面形态改变,比较各种防龋方法对牙面的作用都有着极重要的意义。1963年Boyde等人在观察了海牛牙,猴牙釉质表面后,提出了三个基本观点,(1)正常釉质表面有许多凹陷是童氏突起所在地;(2)这些凹陷的特征与釉内釉柱排列方向有关;(3)人牙表面凹陷与猴牙相似,
