Through its own efforts, residents of a small county in northern California completed the 362MW Yuba hydropower project in 1970. The project, which includes a 196m high dam, two small dams and two power stations, was completed in only 47 months and fully operational. The works were constructed under a total fixed-price contract, requiring all civil works and the supply and installation of all mechanical and electrical equipment to be completed by the contractor. The project promised to bring a number of socio-economic and environmental benefits to the public. Outlines how the project fulfilled its promise during the 31A’s operation.
