At the foothill of Mount Fuji, a group of people live gregariously. They practice permaculture using no fertilizer or pesticide and lead a cyclic way of life without making any surplus waste. Everyone exerts his or her talent and ability in a specific area, engaging in farming, cooking, child-raising, tendering the mentally disabled members, musical creation, etc. All their incomes are distributed evenly and the life cost is jointly paid. Villagers in this micro-economic community enjoy a self-sustained and organic life, which sharply runs against the lifestyle of modern capitalist society.
In 1994, the original 34 people from 11 families settled down at the foothill of Mount Fuji and established a large family that transcends blood boundary--Konohana Nouen (Konohana Farm). Hoping to return to the nature, they started from scratch and embarked on a trial of building a self-sufficient community.
Michiyo Furuhashi, the founder of the community, was once a manager of a decoration company in Aichi Prefecture. The idea of building an eco-friendly community came to her when she was shocked by the huge damage and pollution to the environment caused by masses of waste materials produced from interior decoration. Since then, the idea took root in her mind.
Today, after 15 years of hard work, 10 species of rice and over 250 organic crops and vegetables are produced in the community without applying any fertilizer or pesticide or transgenic technology. The products of their organic agriculture satisfy the demands of the community and are shared by the public through fixed shops, direct sending and website sales. Vegetarian diet is promoted there. They produce a wide variety of "Vegetarian Lunchboxes" and "New Year Vegan Packages".
Their pursuit of returning to the nature mentally and physically and their unique lifestyle attract the attention of Japan's media as well as numerous visitors from Japan and abroad. In a summer, tourists even reached over 500. More and more people migrate here. In 2007, it changed its name to Konohana Family and adopted "All We Need Is Love and Rice" as its slogan. During 15 years since its founding, while following the rules of nature and producing safe and healthy food which nurtured life, they also built a life dojo which helped them return to original and selfless love.
