国兰型艺即兰叶的叶型、叶姿、叶质巧妙,变化多端的型式,是兰叶特殊的章法。欣赏兰花的型艺就像欣赏中国书法艺术中的狂草。台湾著名兰花专家彭双松先生在他的力作《台湾兰蕙新辑》中,对型艺中的精品,作了图文并茂的介绍和分析。就目前来说,型艺主要有两大类:矮种与奇型。矮种即矮型,是指兰叶特别短宽的墨兰、建兰、春剑、春兰等品种,以叶质厚、叶面皱、叶尾钝为鉴赏标准。有的人认为叶短于12cm左右为矮种;有的兰书则说兰叶20cm～30cm长为矮种。笔者以为,矮种不能以某个尺度为限,应从总体体现,以20cm左右、短宽比例恰当者当属。
